BETTER WOODLANDS FOR WALES

Better Woodlands for Wales (BWW) is the Forestry Commission Wales grant scheme tailored to deliver the Welsh Assembly Government's Woodland Strategy – Woodlands for Wales.

Better Woodlands for Wales is designed around a Management Plan that allows grants to be drawn down during the plan's period of operation. Plans are written for five years in detail and for twenty years in outline. Grant aid is available for a broad range of forest operations to manage existing woodlands and to create new ones.

Management Plans have to be written by a Management Planner approved and trained on the system by the Forestry Commission and supported by Specialist Assessors who can provide additional expertise. UPM Tilhill Forest Managers in Wales are approved Management Planners and many are also Specialist Assessors.

Woodland Improvement Grants are payable for silvicultural, environmental and social improvements at 25%, 50% or 75% of standard costs according to how closely they meet the objectives of the Woodland Strategy. New Planting grants of up to £2,425/ha for Native Woodlands in areas identified as having good potential to form linked habitat networks are also on offer. New planting of other woodland types attract lower rates. For new woodlands planted on improved agricultural land an annual payment is available for 10 years to compensate for loss of income. The level of payment is £250/ha for farmers and £100/ha for other land owners.
